Copyright details

Associated Content authors can select one of three license agreements when submitting content (the more restrictive the agreement, the higher your potential to earn revenue from content).

  • Exclusive license: An exclusive license grants AC copyright ownership to your original, unpublished work, and you forfeit all rights, including copyright ownership. You may not remove, reuse, or claim authorship of the content once it is forfeited under an exclusive license.

Under such license, you are eligible for higher up-front payments than under a non-exclusive license.
  • Non-exclusive license: This license allows you to retain copyright ownership of your work, and the ability to republish it elsewhere after first publishing with AC, but AC has first publication rights, which means the right to publish your content for the first time (it must be previously unpublished), including the rights to sub-license, reproduce, publicly display, perform, transmit, edit, modify, create derivatives works of your content. Essentially, you lose control over what the site decides to do with your content indefinitely, although you can still re-use your content elsewhere. You may not remove your work from the site.

You have a choice, at the time of submission, of whether to allow your content to be eligible for distribution with AC partners, which grants those partners the above rights as well (and potentially increases the audience for the content).
  • Display license: If you choose a display license, your content can be previously published. A display license grants AC the right to sublicense, reproduce, publicly display, distribute, and perform your content, and collect all associated revenue. You can revise or remove the content from the site. Content licensed under a display license is not distributed with AC partners.

Other details about service:

  • For exclusive and non-exclusive licenses, AC can choose (but is not obligated) to pay an up-front fee for the article if it meets their criteria (it must be of a certain quality level, and have the potential to perform in search results). Display-only content is not eligible for up-front payments.

b. Termination. With respect to any Display License granted by You to Company herein, You shall have the right to terminate the Display License without cause or reason, upon notice (which notice may be in e-mail form) to Company. With respect to any other License Type Grant granted by You to Company herein, such grant shall be irrevocable and may not be terminated by You for any reason.

Author has the choice of assigning all rights (rescinding copyright ownership), issuing a non-exclusive license, or issuing a display license, with a different revenue potential for each selection. Additionally, certain assignments offered by AC are designated as work for hire, and are marked as such.
